Lego Harry Potter Years 1- 4 Review

by JamesMcKenna on Jul.07, 2010, under PlayStation 3, Reviews, Reviews, Xbox 360

LEGO Harry Potter years 1-4 is the latest edition of Traveller’s Tales games. Its available for PC, Nintendo DS, Wii, PSP, PS3 and xBox 360. The story mode itself is very fun to play with some mockery of the original Harry Potter films and books. There are many features including the two custom character slots, also found in the LEGO Start Wars: The Complete Saga game. You can then use these characters in the free mode of the game, allowing you to explore places like Hogwarts, The Leaky Cauldron and Diagon Alley. Free mode is definitely vital if your goal is to finis the game 100%. The story mode itself finished is worth about 25% in total of the completed game. In most levels there should be at least one “Student in Peril”. The objective with these students is to use your magic skills to free the Student in Peril from where he is. From collecting a certain amount of ‘studs’ in a particular level, you will be granted a Gold Brick, also for every Student in Peril rescued you will also be awarded a Gold Brick. In total there are 200 Gold Bricks to be collected for different reasons. These bricks can be exchanged for in shops to buy thing in Diagon Alley. This gives the game alot of game play time to accomplish as well as it being extremely fun to play.

The multiplayer aspect is also fun as two people can play using a co-op perspective. Like in Lego Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues when the characters are together then they can both be seen on the screen, but as they move apart the screen divides in an almost un-noticable way. The part i like best about this is that when the players return to each other then the screens fade back into one another. This is truly ‘magic’.

There are in total of about 167 characters to play from. These can be unlocked in the Story Mode or in Free Mode from finding disks with their faces on them then bought in Diagon Alley. You can change to different characters in the middle of the game if your lucky enough to find a  cauldron for making Polyjuice Potion. Other types of potion are Super-Strength and Invincibility. most of the Main Characters  have a special ability allowing them to reach certain areas. For example, Harry has his invincibility cloke and Ron(until year 3) Has Scabbers the rat to reach small areas that the other characters cannot reach.

The game has received positive reviews. Official Nintendo Magazine gave the Wii and DS version 80%. Saying that it was “one of the best Harry Potter games ever”,but that it lacked originality compared to previous Lego games. Gamespot gave the console versions an 8/10, complimenting the large amount of secrets and charm. IGN praised the game giving it an 8.5, complementing the new additions to the game, while the PSP version of the game received a 7.0. I personally would agree with Gamespot and give the console version of this game 8/10 and should definitely be on the wish list of any Harry Potter or devoted LEGO game fan.

Modern Warfare 2 Resurgence Pack

by jamesmccarron on May.28, 2010, under Gameplay, Gameplay, PlayStation 3, Trailers, Trailers, Xbox 360

So we are less than a week away from the release of the second map pack for MW2 entitled the Resurgence Package. Here’s what you’ll be getting…

Via ModernWarfare2.com

“Carnival,” a large abandoned theme park that offers lots of unique vantage points that work well for all game modes. The once vibrant rides now sit idle and neglected as perfect cover points in one of the most original multiplayer locations for Modern Warfare 2.

“Fuel,” a massive oil refinery with extremely long sightlines great for medium- to long-range firefights. The spacious surroundings offer a great sniper advantage; offices, warehouses, and buildings house objectives and provide opportunity for close-range firefights.

“Trailer Park,” a medium-sized mobile estate with a maze of tight flank routes and lots of cover. Junk covered yards, deserted trailers, and debris-riddled surroundings offer intense firefights with a wide variety of vantage points and routes available.

“Strike,” a large urban desert town, excellent for medium-to-large team games. The large monument, connecting streets, and surrounding buildings offer great firefights in Team Deathmatch, and great vantage points for objective team games.

“Vacant,” a deserted Russian office complex offering a great mixture of interior and exterior combat. Long hallways with minimal cover points offer a fast escape route for potential runners, but high accuracy and fast aiming is required when advancing through this large complex.

Battlefield Bad Company 2 Review

Battlefield 2 Review

Written by m3ga0n3.

The next iteration of Battlefield is here in DICE’s long-awaited sequel to the first bad Company. There’s no doubting DICE’s expertise when it comes to multiplayer shooters. Its unique style with maps and vehicles puts it amongst the very best of the best. Unlike Halo and Call of Duty though, the Battlefield series is yet to amaze us with a good single-player experience. While Battlefield 2: Modern Combat and the original Bad Company both featured single-player campaigns, both fell well short of the kind of gameplay we’ve come to expect from Infinity Ward or Bungie.

Unfortunately, DICE still hasn’t improved with its single-player design in Bad Company 2. Unforgivable bugs, destroy a campaign that’s far from brilliant in the first place – even without taking the bugs into account, Bad Company 2 still plays out averagely. Gamers are brought from one set-piece to the next, through a storyline that neither immerses or engages you, with a lack of memorable moments that inspire you to keep playing. But I could target this sort of criticism at many FPS titles; the real annoyance comes from oversights that make me wonder whether the game has even gone through a full testing process.

Thanks to a system that occasionally makes it possible to simply run to the next waypoint on the map (regardless of whether or not you’ve killed all of the enemies) and instantly trigger the next part of the level, there are whole sections of Bad Company 2 that play out more like Mirror’s Edge than Battlefield. The problem isn’t limited to running between points either as, whenever stray vehicles come into the equation, it’s just as easy to jump in one of them and drive to the next waypoint. Problems with the NPCs, which don’t seem to know quite how to react when you run at them, also make this approach surprisingly easy and effective at times.

I’m not suggesting that every level in the game can be played out like this – far from it – but it was possible on a handful of different occasions during my playthrough and I’m pretty sure that a second playthrough would reveal a few more strange occurances as well. For this sort of thing to happen once in an FPS is unfortunate; twice suggests bad game design, but three or more times is just lazy on the developer’s part. It really does ruin a campaign that’s otherwise average at the very least and even manages to raise its head above the many problems from time to time.

Most of the best levels, where the squad have to defend an outpost from incoming men, are solidly designed and gripping enough to give the player a certain amount of tension. One particular sniping section – where gunshots have to be fired under thunder and lightning – also shows some innovation beyond the standard combat of plain cover shooting. A vast improvement in DICE’s Frostbite engine is noticeable as well, with more destructible environments than were present in the original Bad Company.

I struggle to find positives beyond that though. Perhaps it’s fair to say that vehicle sections are solid enough, due mainly to the fact that the vehicles are lifted straight out of the multiplayer and placed in action-packed sequences enough to keep the player interested, but that’s about it. Bad Company 2’s 7 or so hours of single-player are plain.
Although once you get to the multiplayer, this is where the game turns it around. As they have been delivering for more than 8 years now, DICE have given us more of the huge maps we expect from them, amazingly balanced classes and a sense of free will over a bigger amount of vehicles and aircraft than any other FPS out there. Conquest Mode and Rush Mode from the original game make a return. They have added other cool Squad Deathmatch and Squad Rush modes, where they focus on infantry combat instead of vehicles. In fact, only Squad Deathmatch features one vehicle for the squads to fight over. These new modes are a welcome addition to the package while a large amount of upgrades, perks and unlockables add a long-term element to the multiplayer.

Overall, the game is a solid title that is ideal if you are starting to get bored of Modern Warfare 2. The single-player lacks any real memorable moments but the multiplayers mix of vehicle and infantry combat will make your purchase well worth the money.
